SAP Digital Manufacturing and Embedded Analytics: Integrated Solutions for Enhanced Efficiency

Share

Where do we use SAP Digital Manufacturing (SAP DM)?

SAP Digital Manufacturing (SAP DM) is a powerful solution set designed to digitalize manufacturing processes, increase efficiency, and help businesses achieve operational excellence. This solution offers the following features that benefit organizations greatly:

  • Real-time monitoring of production lines and machines
  • Collection of production data
  • More efficient data analysis

SAP DM enables businesses to gain a deeper understanding of their manufacturing processes, helping them make more informed decisions.

Where do we use Embedded Analytics?

Embedded Analytics refers to analytics tools integrated within SAP applications. These tools allow users to perform powerful analyses directly within the application, without the need to switch to an external platform. The advantages of Embedded Analytics include:

  • Facilitating data-driven decision-making
  • Accelerating reporting processes
  • Visualizing data insights to provide meaningful analyses

These features support businesses in making faster and more effective decisions.

Integration of SAP Digital Manufacturing and Embedded Analytics

SAP Digital Manufacturing and Embedded Analytics work together to offer a more robust data analysis and reporting process. An example of this integration is the Manage Dashboards application. With Manage Dashboards, users can:

  • Create comprehensive and customizable dashboards
  • Visualize data through powerful analytics, enabling faster access to information
  • Generate reports more quickly and efficiently

Single Sign-On (SSO) Configuration

To simplify access to SAP systems and enhance security, Single Sign-On (SSO) is crucial. This feature allows users to access all SAP applications with a single login.

SSO configuration offers the following benefits:

  • Improved user experience: Users can access all applications with a single sign-on process.
  • Enhanced security: User authentication is handled centrally, simplifying security management.
  • Increased productivity: Reduces time spent switching between different systems.

  1. SAP Digital Manufacturing and Analytics Solutions

SAP Digital Manufacturing (SAP DM) helps businesses achieve more efficient production by digitizing manufacturing processes. This platform offers comprehensive tools to monitor events on production lines, collect data, and analyze it meaningfully. SAP DM enables businesses to track every step of their manufacturing process, helping them detect issues early, address bottlenecks, and improve overall efficiency.

Data analysis helps organizations make more meaningful use of their data. However, switching to an external analytics platform for analysis can lead to unnecessary time delays. This is where Embedded Analytics comes into play. Embedded Analytics provides powerful analysis tools integrated into SAP applications, allowing users to analyze data directly within the application with rich visualizations.

  1. Initialize Embedded Analytics: Introduction and Core Functions

The Initialize Embedded Analytics feature enables a secure connection between SAP Digital Manufacturing applications and SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC). This feature allows users to access the SAC platform directly from SAP DM with Single Sign-On (SSO) functionality.

This process is facilitated through configurations made on SAP BTP (Business Technology Platform). With SSO, users can access data across both platforms without needing to log in again.

The Initialize Embedded Analytics process requires downloading and uploading SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) authentication metadata files, creating appropriate user groups, and ensuring proper authorization. These configurations establish a secure connection between systems, allowing seamless operation between the two platforms.

  1. SSO (Single Sign-On) Configuration

The Single Sign-On (SSO) feature eliminates the need for users to repeatedly authenticate themselves when switching between SAP Digital Manufacturing and SAP Analytics Cloud applications. A secure connection is established between SAP DM and SAC using an identity provider like SAP Cloud Identity Services – Identity Authentication.

Steps for SSO Configuration:

  1. Go to Analytics Application Configuration:
    • Navigate to the Configuration for Analytics section and click on Initialize Embedded Analytics.
    • Download the SAML metadata file for SAP Analytics Cloud.

2. SAP Cloud Identity Services – Identity Authentication Configuration:

    • Log in to the SAP Cloud Identity Services portal and go to Application & Resources > Applications.
    • Create a new application with your desired name and select SAP BTP Solution as the application type.
    • Leave the Parent Application field empty and leave the Home URL blank.

3. New Application Configuration:

    • Select your newly created application.
    • Go to the Trust tab and select SAML 2.0 Configuration.
    • Under Define from Metadata, upload the SAML metadata XML file downloaded in step 1.

4. Authentication and Attribute Settings:

    • Save the configuration.
    • In Subject Name Identifier, choose Identity Directory and Email as primary attributes.
    • Save again.
    • Select Email as the Default Name ID Format and save.

5. Add Groups:

    • Go to the Attributes tab, click Add, and select Groups.
    • Under Expression, enter “sac” and under Email, select Identity Directory as email.
    • Save the configuration.

6. Tenant Settings Configuration:

    • Go to Tenant Settings from the main menu.
    • Click SAML 2.0 Configuration and download the Metadata File.

7. Upload SAML Metadata File:

    • Return to Configuration for Analytics and click on Initialize Embedded Analytics.
    • In the configuration section, click Browse and select the SAML metadata file downloaded from your identity provider.
    • Save the configuration.

8. Update Configuration Status:

    • After saving, the Identity Provider Status will change from Configuration In Progress to Configured within a few minutes.
  1. Creating Dashboards in SAP Manage Dashboards

Steps to Create a Dashboard in SAP Manage Dashboards:

  1. Open the Manage Dashboards Application and Create a New Dashboard:
    • Open the Manage Dashboards app in your SAP Digital Manufacturing platform.
    • Click Create to open Query Designer where you design your data source.
  2. Select Data Source:
    • In the Available Data section, click on Manufacturing Data Objects (MDOs).
    • Select the Downtime MDO and drag it into the Query Designer area.

3. Select Data Fields:

    • Right-click on Downtime and open Data Fields to select the fields you need, such as:
      • Resource
      • Plant
      • DurationInSeconds
      • Status

5. Add Filters:

    • Add filters like Resource or Status to enable dynamic updates of data on the dashboard.

5. Calculate Average Downtime:

    • Add a Calculated Column to calculate the average downtime.
    • Use the formula DurationInSeconds / 3600 to convert downtime from seconds to hours.

6. Visualize the Data with Graphs:

    • Click Add Visualization and select a graph type (e.g., Bar Chart).

    • In Measures, click Add Measure and choose Average Downtime (Hours).

    • In Dimensions, click Add Dimension and add Resource and Status.

7. Customize the Graph and Make It Interactive:

    • Customize the graph by adding colors, labels, or other visual elements.
    • Add interactive filters for user customization.

8. Save as a Story:

    • Save the dashboard as a story via the File menu by selecting Save as Story.

9. Share the Dashboard:

    • Click Share and choose the user access levels to determine who can view or edit the dashboard.

  1. Exporting the Dashboard Output (PDF)

To export the dashboard output as a PDF, follow these steps:

  1. Switch to View Mode:
    • Open the story or dashboard you wish to share or export and switch to View Mode.
  2. Find the Export Option:
    • Look for an Export icon in the upper right corner of the dashboard.

3. Select Output Format:
